As in paradise, God walks in the Holy Scriptures, seeking man.- Ambrose of Milan (339-397), De Paradiso

In several places in the scriptures God says,"Behold I do a new thing!" New heart, new birth, new covenant, new way, new hope, new life, new mercy, new spirit, new song, NEW! NEW! NEW! Even a new heaven and a new earth! I am not looking back but ahead! LORD bring on 2011 and lets meet it together in your divine newness! - Stephen Crott

A child educated only at school is an uneducated child.- George Santayana, 1863 - 1952

To be a king and wear a crown is a thing more glorious to them that see it than it is pleasant to them that bear it.-Elizabeth I of England, 1533 - 1603

If I follow the inclination of my nature, it is this: beggar-woman and single, far rather than queen and married.- Elizabeth I of England, 1533 - 1603

There is no marvel in a woman learning to speak, but there would be in teaching her to hold her tongue.- Elizabeth I of England, 1533 - 1603

It often astonishes me that I did not see the importance of meditation upon Scripture earlier in my Christian life. As the outward man is not fit for work for any length of time unless he eats, so it is with the inner man. What is the food for the inner man? Not prayer, but the Word of God – not the simple reading of the Word of God, so that it only passes through our minds, just as water runs through a pipe. No, we must consider what we read, ponder over it, and apply it to our hearts.- George Muller,The Autobiography of George Muller, 1984, p. 139.

How desperately difficult it is to be honest with oneself. It is much easier to be honest with other people.- Edward Benson

God is the author of the Bible, and only the truth it contains will lead people to true happiness. A Christian should read this precious Book every day with earnest prayer and meditation. But like many believers, I preferred to read the works of uninspired men rather than the oracles of the living God. Consequently, I remained a spiritual baby both in knowledge and grace.- George Muller'The Autobiography of George Muller, 1984, p. 21

If anyone thinks that on account of our trials of faith during this year we have been disappointed in our expectations or discouraged in the work, my answer is that the very opposite is true. Such days were expected from the beginning. The chief end for which the institution was established is that the Church would see the hand of God stretched out on our behalf in answer to prayer. Our desire, therefore, is not that we may be without trials of faith, but that the Lord would graciously support us in the trial and that we may not dishonor Him by distrust.- George Muller,The Autobiography of George Muller, 1984, p. 130

It has been a frequent trait in Christian theologians down
the ages to commit themselves whole-heartedly to the
fashionable philosophies of their day, while passing severe
judgments on their predecessors for adopting precisely the same
attitude.-E. L. Mascall (1905-1993), The Secularization of Christianity, London: Darton, Longman Todd, 1966, p.103

Above all, let us pray daily that our own Christianity may at any rate be genuine, sincere, real and true. Our faith may be feeble, our hope dim, our knowledge small, our failures frequent, our faults many. But at all events let us be real and true. Let us be able to say with poor, weak, erring Peter, "You, Lord, who know all things, know that I love You." (John 21:17.)~ J.C. Ryle, Expository Thoughts on the Gospels: John, volume 3, [Carlisle, PA: Banner of Truth, 1987], 5.

When it comes to finding available men in Minnesota, the odds are good, but the goods are odd.- Garrison Keillor

Intelligence is like four-wheel drive. It only allows you to get stuck in more remote places.- Garrison Keillor

I never knew all there was in the Bible until I spent those years in jail. I was constantly finding new treasures.-John Bunyan (1628-1688), quoted in A Treasury of Sermon Illustrations, Charles Langworthy Wallis, ed., Abingdon-Cokesbury Press, 1950, p. 27

The doctrine of Christ crucified is the strength of a Minister. I, for one, would not be without it for all the world. I would feel like a soldier without arms, like an artist without his pencil, like a pilot without his compass, like a laborer without his tools. Let others, if they will, preach the law and morality; let others hold forth the terrors of hell, and the joys of heaven; let others dwell on the sacraments and the Church. Give me the cross of Christ. This is the only lever which has ever turned the world upside down up to this point, and made men forsake their sins: and if this will not, nothing will.~ J.C. Ryle, Tract: Christ Crucified

How is the will of God done in heaven? Sadly? Burdensomely? Begrudgingly? No! It is done gladly! If I then pray, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” how can I not be motivated by a desire to be glad? It is a contradiction to pray for the will of God to be done in my life the way it is done in heaven, and then to say I am indifferent to whether I am glad or not. When the earth rejoices to do His will and does it perfectly, His will shall be done on earth as it is in heaven.-John Piper,Desiring God, p. 140-41

Peace if possible, truth at all costs. ~Martin Luther

Let the man who would hear God speak read Holy Scripture ~Martin Luther

Free will is corrupted nature's deformed darling, the Pallas or beloved self-conception of darkened minds.~John Owen

Peace is but an illusion when Truth is scourged for the sake of it.~Joel Schaible

Grace is a provision for men who are so fallen that they cannot lift the axe of justice, so corrupt that they cannot change their own natures, so averse to God that they cannot turn to Him, so blind that they cannot see Him, so deaf that they cannot hear Him, and so dead that He Himself must open their graves and lift them into resurrection. -G.S. Bishop

I know well there is no comfort for this pain of parting: the wound always remains, but one learns to bear the pain, and learns to thank God for what He gave, for the beautiful memories of the past, and the yet more beautiful hope for the future.-Max Muller

I am born for God only. Christ is nearer to me than father,
or mother, or sister,--a near relation, a more affectionate
friend; and I rejoice to follow Him, and to love Him. Blessed
Jesus! thou art all I want--a forerunner to me in all I ever
shall go through, as a Christian, a minister, or a missionary.-Henry Martyn (1781-1812), Life and letters of the Rev.Henry Martyn, B.D., with John Sargent, London:Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, 1862, p. 140

Fear not the knife that God wields, for his hand is sure.-Francois Fenelon

How few there are who have courage enough to own their faults, or resolution enough to mend them.- Benjamin Franklin, 1706 - 1790

For some years now I have read through the Bible twice
every year. If you picture the Bible to be a mighty tree and
every word a little branch, I have shaken every one of these
branches because I wanted to know what it was and what it
means. -Martin Luther (1483-1546), Preface to the Prophets [1532], in What Luther Says: an anthology, v. I, Ewald Martin Plass, ed., Concordia Pub. House, 1959, p. 83

Tradition wears a snowy beard, romance is always young..-John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807 - 1892

We cannot attain to the understanding of Scripture either
by study or by the intellect. Your first duty is to begin by
prayer. Entreat the Lord to grant you, of His great mercy, the
true understanding of His Word. There is no other interpreter
of the Word of God than the Author of this Word, as He Himself
has said, "They shall be all taught of God." (John 6:45) Hope
for nothing from your own labors, from your own understanding:
trust solely in God, and in the influence of His Spirit.
Believe this on the word of a man who has experience.-Martin Luther (1483-1546), in a letter (see What Luther Says: An Anthology, #233), quoted in History of the Great Reformation of the Sixteenth Century in Germany, Jean Henri Merle d'Aubigne, London: Walther, 1838, p. 320

Contentment comes when we remember that what God chooses is far better than what we choose.-Unknown

There must be a constant and increasing appreciation that
though sin still remains it does not have the mastery. There is
a total difference between surviving sin and reigning sin, the
regenerate in conflict with sin and the unregenerate complacent
to sin. It is one thing for sin to live in us: it is another
for us to live in sin... It is of paramount concern for the
Christian and for the interests of his sanctification that he
should know that sin does not have the dominion over him, that
the forces of redeeming, regenerative, and sanctifying grace
have been brought to bear upon him in that which is central in
his moral and spiritual being, that he is the habitation of God
through the Spirit, and that Christ has been formed in him the
hope of glory.-John Murray (1898-1975), Redemption, Accomplished and Applied, Grand Rapids: W. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., 1955, p. 145-146

The great cause of neglecting the Scriptures is not want of time, but want of heart, some idol taking the place of Christ. - Robert Chapman

We must remember that our experience of union with God, our
feeling of His presence, is altogether accidental and
secondary. It is only a side effect of His actual presence in
our souls, and gives no sure indication of that presence in any
case. For God Himself is above all apprehensions and ideas and
sensations, however spiritual, that can ever be experienced by
the spirit of man in this life. - Thomas Merton (1915-1968), No Man is an Island, New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1955; reprint,Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2002, p. 225

Do not trust your memory, it is a net full of holes; the most beautiful prizes slip through it. - Georges Duhamel

It is commonly observed that a sudden wealth, like a prize drawn in a lottery or a large bequest to a poor family, does not permanently enrich.- Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1803 - 1882

Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.- Theodore Roosevelt, 1858 - 1919

I can forgive Alfred Nobel for having invented dynamite, but only a fiend in human form could have invented the Nobel Prize. - George Bernard Shaw, 1856 - 1950

The vigour of our spiritual life will be in exact proportion to the place held by the Bible in our life and thoughts. -George Muller

A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety. - Aesop

Courage is the price that life extracts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release from little things; Knows not the livid loneliness of fear.- Amelia Earhart, 1897 - 1937

Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without. - Siddhartha Gautama, 563 - 483 BC
(No. If comes from above, but this is Buddhism encapsulated- GJW)

Five great enemies to peace inhabit with us: avarice, ambition, envy, anger and pride. If those enemies were to be banished, we should infallibly enjoy perpetual peace. - Francesco Petrarch, 1304 - 1374

Our work for peace must begin within the private world of each one of us. To build for man a world without fear, we must be without fear. To build a world of justice, we must be just. - Dag Hammarskjöld, 1905 - 1961

"While we were still sinners--Christ died for us!" Romans 5:8
He loved us more than His own life! The 'pelican' feeds her young ones with her own blood. Oh! sirs, Christ is our pelican, who has nourished and fed us with His own blood. "My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink," says Christ.
Christ's red blood--has taken away our red guilt!
Scarlet-red sinners--have become milk-white saints, when washed in His blood!
All our precious mercies--come swimming to us in Christ's precious blood!
Christ bled love at every vein! His drops of blood--were drops of love! Yes, the more bloody He was--the more lovely! He was most lovely upon the cross--because then He showed most love to us!
Christ took upon Him our shame--that we might be partakers of His glory!
He died our death--that we might live His life!
He suffered our hell--that we might enjoy His heaven!
He endured the sorest pains--that we might enjoy the sweetest pleasures!
He went through the furnace of wrath--to keep us out of the flames of hell!
Oh! how infinitely does He love us-William Dyer, "Christ's Famous Titles" Christ is Our Pelican!

I hope you will never forget that the Bible is the history of God's acts to men, not of men's thoughts about God. It begins from Him. He is acting and speaking in it throughout.- Frederick Denison Maurice (1805-1872), Ecclesiastical History, London: Macmillan, 1854, p. 222, 2

Oh, let none think his labor is lost because the fruit does not immediately appear. - John Wesley, 1703 - 1791

A small daily task if it really be daily, will beat the labors of a spasmodic Hercules -Anthony Trollope, 1815 - 1882

Read the scripture, not only as an history, but as a love-letter sent to you from God which may affect your hearts.- Thomas Watson

I wish you could convince yourself that God is often nearer to us, and more effectually present with us, in sickness than in health. -Brother Lawrence

We are in the habit of saying that Christ saved us by dying for us on the Cross. In an important sense, this is true. We never could have been saved, if He had not died for us. But we are actually saved by our relation to a living, loving, personal Savior—into whose hands we commit all the interests of our lives; and who becomes our friend, our helper, our keeper, our burden bearer—our all in all. Christian faith is not merely laying our sins on the Lamb of God and trusting to His one great sacrifice; it is the laying of ourselves on the living, loving heart of one whose friendship becomes thenceforward the sweetest joy of our lives!
"The life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me!" Galatians 2:20 - J. R. Miller, A Living, Loving, Personal Savior

Where do you tall a Muslim to start reading?

Last night I met with T an illegal immigrant for six years and now detained awaiting deportation. He asked me for a bible in Hausa and one was given to him. Where do you tell a Muslim to start reading? I suggested Genesis, Psalms and Matthew. What do you think?

Quotes

Why is it that we can't get a child to read the Bible at home, but when in prison they will!

Either the Bible will keep you away from sin, or sin will keep you away from the Bible!

Before you complain, read the Book.

Just as the Holy Spirit came upon the womb of Mary, so He came upon the brain of a Moses, a David, an Isaiah, a Paul, a John and the rest of the writers of the divine library. The power of the Highest overshadowed them, therefore that holy thing which was born of their minds is called the Holy Bible, the word of God. The writing of Luke will, of course, have the vocabulary of Luke and the work of Paul will bear the stamp of Paul s mind. However, this is only in the same manner that the Lord Jesus might have had eyes like his mother s or hair that was the same color and texture as hers. He did not inherit her sins because the Holy Spirit has come upon her. If we ask, how could this be, the answer is God says so. And the writings of men of the Book did not inherit the errors of their carnal minds because their writings were conceived by the Holy Spirit and born out of their personalities without partaking of their fallen nature. If we ask, how could this be, again the answer is God says so. -- DONALD GREY BARNHOUSE,
