Quotes 30 Jun 17

"A universal atonement removes the "power" from the blood of Christ, and places salvation into the hands and valuation of a beggar. Do this and live! A powerless atonement is no atonement at all.The Father said, "when I see the Blood" not "when you see the blood." The power and efficacy is in the blood of the atonement, not the faith which claims it. Faith is the instrumental means, not the basis to our salvation. It's the Father's estimation of the blood that determines it's efficacious nature in salvation, not the beggar who (attempts to) claim it as his own." - Gary Edwards

The primary enemy of 21st Century Christianity isn't Feminism, Fascism, LGBTism, or Islam. The chief enemy is our own laziness after God.- Joshua D Jones @BlueCheezWhisky

Anyone rejecting an ideological shibboleth is vilified as racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic, climate-change denier and so on.Such people aren’t being shamed over what they do but what they are. The aim is not to change their behaviour but to disbar them from the community of right-thinking people. In the interests of making a kinder, gentler, nicer world we have become tyrannical.- MELANIE PHILLIPS, june 27 2017,the times, How we’ve turned into a shameless society

Quotes 28 Jun 17

"The Catechism presents to us a religion in which all of its doctrines culminate in attributing nothing to man and everything to God. Consequently, it causes man completely to look away from the creature to that he seeks and finds his comfort, peace, and salvation exclusively in the triune God" "The Christian's only comfort in life and death" Theodorus Vandergroe (1705-84).An exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism(p2)

"The manner in which one is called to travel to heaven is a way that is filled with sharp thorns.”-  "The Christian's only comfort in life and death" Exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism by Theodorus Vandergroe (1705-84)(p6)

If a little knowledge is dangerous, where is the man who has so much as to be out of danger? - T. H. Huxley, 'On Elemental Instruction in Physiology', 1877

'Perhaps the highest and loftiest acts a Christian can have toward God are worship and prayer.' — Mack Tomlinson http://buff.ly/2rwUdVf

"But, sir, this prejudice goes farther. It debars men from heaven. While, sir, this slavery cuts off the colored portion of the community from religious privileges, men are made infidels. What, they demand, is your Christianity? How do you regard your brethren? How do you treat them at the Lord’s table? Where is your consistency in talking about the heathen; traversing the ocean to circulate the Bible everywhere, while you frown upon them at your door? These things meet us, and weigh down our spirits."- Theodore S. Wright,1797-1847. Attended Princeton Theological Seminary. Pastored First Colored Presbyterian Church of New York.

Quotes 27 Jun 17

“Jesus is not committed to repairing Adam’s old world. He is committed to raising up his new world. It’s more glorious this way—not simply to heal the illness but to turn the funeral into a homecoming. What Jesus does for Lazarus is a picture of his plans for the world. He is not committed to repairing this fallen world, but to raising it from the dead.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation](144–45)

“Whatever else we say about hell, we should remember that God the Son has entered it so that we never have to.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation](149)

“The Christian God is unique. In some religions God is an individual defined by supremacy. In some religions there are many gods who often war with each other. In neither case is love ultimate. [The Scriptures present] a Father loving his Son in the joy of the Spirit. Only the Christian can truly say, ‘God is love.’” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation](159)

“Jesus says our partner’s gender matters. In our ‘one flesh’ relationship we are not called to another version of ourselves but to our ‘opposite number.’ For the Christian, marriage is a flow between two interlocking partners: a man and a woman. In this way, Christians believe that marriages reflect to the world the ultimate romance story: the love of Jesus for those who are different to him—us.” (166)- Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation]

Quotes 26 Jun 17

“There are no promises of earthly riches or easy living. In fact, Jesus leads us into a suffering world to engage with it more, not less. While most people spend their lives keeping back, filling up, and clinging on, Jesus teaches us to press it, pour out, and give away. The way of Jesus is not a trouble-free existence—far from it. But Jesus does promise that, in giving ourselves away, we will truly find ourselves.”  Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation](132)(112–13)

“One-ness with Jesus brings us into a one-ness with church.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation](132)
(113)

“The point of the Bible is not simply education, though there is much to learn. Its point is not simply entertainment, though its stories and songs are inspirational. Its point is not simply ethical improvement, though it has shaped the moral life of civilizations. The point of the Bible is to encounter Jesus.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation](132)
(117)

“‘Dead men don’t rise.’ This is true. But what if Jesus is more than a man?” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation](132)

“Given that the Bible is a library of 66 books written by 40 authors over 15 centuries, the headline story is actually the incredible unity of the Bible. . . . On Good Friday alone Jesus fulfilled 29 separate Old Testament prophecies. . . . The consistency question is not a weak point for the Bible; it is perhaps the strongest argument for its divine origin.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation](137)

Quotes for 24 Jun 17

“As miracles go, [the universe spontaneously creating itself] would be unparalleled. Everything from nothing? Christians believe in the virgin birth of Jesus but this would mean the virgin birth of the cosmos. In fact, it’s the virgin birth of the cosmos but without a virgin, without anything.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation].p(55)

“Our first instinct is self-preservation, self-protection, and self-promotion. Of course, as we grow we realize that others don’t respond well to our naked savagery, so we moderate these instincts. We learn to ‘play nice.’ But notice why we play nice: it serves our interests better.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation].p(73)

“Jesus entered our hell so we could have his heaven. . . . Jesus joins us in our failures so we can join him in his family.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation].p(88,90)

“If he is our Champion, then his victory is our victory. We know we look like ‘a bunch of losers’ and we know we’ve contributed nothing to the victory. Nonetheless we sing like we’ve won because, in Jesus, we have.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation].p(102)

Quotes 22 Jun 17

“This traveling preacher never graduated from the recognized academies, never accepted political office, never entered religious orders, never joined the military. He never founded a school, never fathered a dynasty, never wrote a book, never led an army, never had an ounce of earthly power. He was butchered as a blasphemer in his thirties yet today he commands more allegiance than any human has or could. Billions call him Lord. Not bad for a kid born in a shed.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation].p16

“Wherever Jesus sees faith, he has forgiveness on a hair trigger.” - Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation].p19

“Jesus can’t speak of judgment day without putting himself at the center of our cosmic conclusion—he is the Judge. He can’t set eyes on Jerusalem without lamenting the way they’ve treated him for the last millennia. He can’t mention Abraham without saying how terrific it was when they met—2,000 years earlier. . . . He owns divine titles; accepts divine worship; performs divine acts; pronounces divine verdicts; and makes divine oaths. In short, he walks around planet earth like he owns the place.”- Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation].p26, 28

Quotes 21 Jun 17

The Gospel is a warrior's song about the Triumph of the Lamb and the heavenly city of God over the Dragon. - Michael Horton‏ @MichaelHorton

“The story at the heart of Christianity is every [epic] story. There’s a golden age of innocence; mistrust; betrayal; unrequited love; a fall from grace; murder and intrigue; a pit of despair; a Hero’s epic journey; a fight to the death; victory through sacrifice; and a happy ending complete with wedding and singing. . . . The Bible says it was God’s story first. And this story makes sense of our little stories.”- Glen Scrivener’s 321: The Story of God, the World, and You (10Publishing, 2014) [animated presentation].p11

Quotes 20 Jun 17

On 20 June 1776 Anglican clergyman and hymnwriter John Newton wrote in a letter: 'A Christian is not of hasty growth...but rather like the oak, the progress of which is hardly perceptible, but in time becomes a deep-rooted tree.'
BTW according to Jonathan Aitken's biography Newton was in danger of rebuke from his patron, a government minister, when his sympathies were with the 1776 rebels.

"If men will not be governed by the Ten Commandments, they shall be govned by the ten thousand commandments." G.K. Chesterton

"Gentlemen, I am a Catholic. As far as possible, I go to Mass every day. This (taking a rosary out of his pocket) is a rosary. As far as possible, I kneel down and tell these beads every day. If you reject me on account of my religion, I shall thank God that he has spared me the indignity of being your representative.”- former Liberal MP, Hillare Belloc.
He won with a landslide.

"In crosses and miseries, think of Him as a "Father of mercies"; in discomforts, think of Him as a "God of all comfort;" in perplexities and distress, think of Him as a "God of wisdom’…”- Richard Sibbes,  Sermon on II Corinthians

"I go to prepare a place for you,” was one of the last and sweetest assurances that breathed from the lips of the departing Savior. Yes! He has passed within the veil as our Forerunner; He has prepared heaven for us, and by His gentle, wise, and loving discipline He is preparing us for heaven.Bereaved one! death enters not there. Sick one! diseases enfeebles not, wastes not there. Afflicted one! sorrow saddens not there. Oppressed one! cruelty injures not, wounds not there. Weeping one! tears spring not there. "The former things are passed away." The desert is passed, the ocean is crossed, the home is reached, and the soul finds itself in heaven, where all is the perfection of purity, and the plenitude of bliss.- Octavius Winslow

'The sovereignty of God is the sweet pillow on which we lay our heads' Charles Spurgeon

"O friends, if you are afraid of being overcome, take to praising God. If you are in trouble and do not know how to bear it, divert your thoughts by praising God. Get away from the present trail by blessing and magnifying His holy name.- Charles Spurgeon. Sunday Sermon June 15, 1882

"God had one son on earth without sin, but never one without suffering." -  Augustine

Quotes 15 Jun 17

Mahomet established a religion by putting his enemies to death; Jesus Christ by commanding his followers to lay down their lives. - Blaise Pascal, _Pensees_

Mohammedan's religion might be sustained by scimitars, but Christians' religion must be maintained by love. -C. H. Spurgeon (1834-1892) _New Park Street Pulpit_, Volume 3 [1857]

"It is good to regularly weigh ourselves on the scale of God's Word." -Spurgeon

On October 15th 1987, Andrei Gromyko (chairman of the Supreme Soviet), boasted, that "there is capitalism and there is socialism, which was born seventy years ago...And in 1,000 years socialism will still be bringing good to the world." Just four years later the Soviet Union collapsed.

"It is incomprehensible to me that any thinker can calmly call himself a modernist; he might as well call himself a Thursdayite. But apart altogether from that particular disturbance, I am conscious of a general irritation expressed against the people who boast of their advancement and modernity in the discussion of religion. But I never succeeded in saying the quite clear and obvious thing that is really the matter with modernism. The real objection to modernism is simply that it is a form of snobbishness. It is an attempt to crush a rational opponent not by reason, but by some mystery of superiority, by hinting that one is specially up to date or particularly 'in the know.' To flaunt the fact that we have had all the last books from Germany is simply vulgar; like flaunting the fact that we have had all the last bonnets from Paris. To introduce into philosophical discussions a sneer at a creed's antiquity is like introducing a sneer at a lady's age. It is caddish because it is irrelevant. The pure modernist is merely a snob; he cannot bear to be a month behind the fashion." - G. K. Chesterton

Quotes 14 Jun 17

"Be cautious of paying too great a regard to persons and parties. One is your Master, even Christ. "  John Newton

This is the wonderful exchange which, out of his measureless benevolence, he has made with us; that, becoming Son of man with us, he has made us sons of God with him; that , by his descent to earth, he has prepared an ascent to heaven for us; that, by taking on our mortality, he has conferred his immortality upon us; that, accepting our weakness, he has strengthened us by his power; that, receiving our poverty unto himself, he has transferred his wealth to us; that, taking the weight of our iniquity upon himself (which oppressed us), he has clothed us with his righteousness.- Calvin, John. Institutes of the Christian Religion, Institutes

Quotes 13 Jun 17

"Democracy requires the life of faith.”- Prime Minister Thatcher  speaking on the importance of the Holy Bible in shaping and making our nation (1988).

"In the seventh century of the Christian era, a wandering Arab of the lineage of Hagar, the Egyptian, combining the powers of transcendent genius, with the preternatural energy of a fanatic, and the fraudulent spirit of an impostor, proclaimed himself as a messenger from Heaven, and spread desolation and delusion over an extensive portion of the earth. Adopting from the sublime conception of the Mosaic law, the doctrine of one omnipotent God; he connected indissolubly with it, the audacious falsehood, that he was himself his prophet and apostle. Adopting from the new Revelation of Jesus, the faith and hope of immortal life, and of future retribution, he humbled it to the dust, by adapting all the rewards and sanctions of his religion to the gratification of the sexual passion. He poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex, and the allowance of polygamy; and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind. THE ESSENCE OF HIS DOCTRINE WAS VIOLENCE AND LUST: TO EXALT THE BRUTAL OVER THE SPIRITUAL PART OF HUMAN NATURE.
Between these two religions, thus contrasted in their characters, a war of twelve hundred years has already raged. That war is yet flagrant; nor can it cease but by the extinction of that imposture, which has been permitted by Providence to prolong the degeneracy of man. While the merciless and dissolute dogmas of the false prophet shall furnish motives to human action, there can never be peace upon earth, and good will towards men. The hand of Ishmael will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. It is, indeed, amongst the mysterious dealings of God, that this delusion should have been suffered for so many ages, and during so many generations of human kind, to prevail over the doctrines of the meek and peaceful and benevolent Jesus" - John Quincy Adams. This is from American Annual Register, Volume 1; Volume 3, 1827-9 edited by Joseph Blunt but I do not see it attributed to Adams there.

“To ‘multiculturalists,’… oppression is the key to understanding white history, literature, art, and most everything else of European origin. It follows from this that all the narratives of the white, European races are to be seen as propagandistic means of concealing their evil, or, even worse, making their evil appear virtuous. There is no possibility of proceeding in a fair-minded way, the ‘multiculturalists’ believe, unless the narratives of white Europeans are overthrown.”-  Neil Postman. The End of Education: Redefining the Value of School

"Oh , look up, tired and assaulted believer! You have a Friend at court, an Advocate in the chancery of heaven, an Intercessor curtained within the holiest of holies, transacting all your concerns, and through whom you may have access to God with boldness. " Octavius Winslow

“When we are content, we ‘spy mercy in every condition’ and have our hearts laminated with thanksgiving.”Erik Raymond, Chasing Contentment: Trusting God in a Discontented Age (Crossway, 2017) (164

“We’ve always been a party that believed that, while we should be releasing the abilities and energies of individuals, people do have a place within society and we should always ensure that the government provides a safety net for those who can’t help themselves and, for a whole variety of reasons, find themselves in particular difficulties”.- Theresa May

“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled or incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of (other) countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world… But those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world...Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those (who say this) are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by (the unbelievers)? Islam says: Kill them (the non-Muslims), put them to the sword and scatter (their armies).
Does this mean sitting back until (non-Muslims) overcome us? Islam says: Kill in the service of Allah those who may want to kill you! Does this mean that we should surrender (to the enemy)? Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for the Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other (Qur’anic) psalms and Hadiths (sayings of the Prophet) urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all this mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war?I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.” - Ayatollah Khomeini

“I feel it is my duty to plod on while daylight lasts.” – William Carey

“Don’t you know, young man, that from every town and every village and every hamlet in England, wherever it may be, there is a road to London? So from every text of Scripture there is a road to Christ. And my dear brother, your business is, when you get to a text, to say, now, what is the road to Christ? I have never found a text that had not got a road to Christ in it, and if ever I do find one, I will go over hedge and ditch but I would get at my Master, for the sermon cannot do any good unless there is a savor of Christ in it.”
C.H. Spurgeon

"The churches must owe, as we all do know,

Quotes 5 Jun 17

“Contentment is far more powerful than a change of circumstances.
