Quotes 1 Apr 17

Neither the Bible, nor church history, nor Christian experience indicates that a one-size-fits-all crisis conversion is necessary. And the Reformers pressed for a view of Christian discipleship as typically rooted in the catechetical nurture of the baptized community, rather than in radical conversions. The preaching of the Word, sacraments, and prayer are the three ordinary means of grace, as Presbyterians call them. And good Evangelicals know that this is how disciples grow in their faith, regardless of whether they have been Christians all their lives or have come to faith by a crisis experience. Few believe that the Christian life is just one crisis experience after another. Rather, like Luther, they believe that “[w]hen our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, ‘Repent,’ he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.” - Carl R. Trueman

We have, therefore, to say that in our considered judgement the clergy cannot claim the liberty to enter into sexually active homophile relationships. Because of the distinctive nature of their calling, status and consecration, to allow such a claim on their part would be seen as placing that way of life in all respects on a par with heterosexual marriage as a reflection of God’s purposes in creation. The Church cannot accept such a parity and remain faithful to the insights which God has given it through Scripture, tradition and reasoned reflection on experience. - Issues in Human Sexuality (1991)

Quotes 31 Mar17

“God can’t give us peace and happiness apart from Himself because there is no such thing.”
― C.S. Lewis

"Pride sets up the wisdom of a foolish man against the infinite wisdom of God; it makes men presume to judge their Judge, and judge his laws, before they understand them; and to quarrel with all they find unsuitable to their own conceits."Richard Baxter

"The Spirit may rightly be called the key that unlocks for us the treasures of the kingdom of heaven." —John Calvin

When tempted by the Devil to doubt of his salvation, Luther pointed not to the Tower (a conversion experience)  but to the baptismal font. “I have been baptized!” was his consistent defense against Satan’s temptations.- Carl Trueman

Quotes 30 Mar 17

“You can’t live the Christian life without a band of Christian friends, without a family of believers in which you find a place.” Tim Keller Wisdom‏ @DailyKeller

“The folly of Interpreters has been, to foretell times and things, by this Prophecy, as if God designed to make them Prophets. By this rashness they have not only exposed themselves, but brought the Prophecy also into contempt. The design of God was much otherwise. He gave this and the Prophecies of the Old Testaments, not to gratify men’s curiosities by enabling them to foreknow things, but that after they were fulfilled they might be interpreted by the event; and his own Providence, not the Interpreters, be then manifested thereby to the world. For the event of things predicted many ages before, will then be a convincing argument that the world is governed by providence.” --Isaac Newton, “Observations on the Prophecies of Daniel and the Apocalypse of St. John” (published
1733)

There have been few more radical changes in the history of Western
culture than the change in attitude towards war and the military
profession brought about by World War I.  Western literature began as
the literature of a warrior aristocracy, and until 1914 it took the
warrior ethic for granted; it assumed that war was glorious, and the
words _hero_ and _warrior_ were almost synonymous.  Conscription and
"sophisticated" weapons have changed all that....
The symbol of the change was the construction after 1918 in all the
belligerent countries of monuments to the Unknown Soldier.  Previously,
monuments had always been erected to known individuals, victorious
generals and admirals.  About the Unknown Soldier nothing is known
whatever except that he lost his life.  For all we know, he may,
personally, have been a coward.  In his monument, that is to say, we pay
homage to the warrior, not as a hero but as a martyr. -- W. H. Auden, _A Certain World_ (1970), s.v. War

Don't let anybody make you think God chose America as his divine messianic force to be a sort of policeman of the whole world.
God has a way of standing before the nations with justice and it seems I can hear God saying to America "You are too arrogant, and if you don't change your ways, I will rise up and break the backbone of your power, and I will place it in the hands of a nation that doesn't even know my name." --Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)(In a speech at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; August 16, 1967.)

Erudition can produce foliage without bearing fruit. --Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (July 1 1742 – February 24 1799) (German scientist, satirist and philosopher), _Aphorisms (1765-1799)_ Notebook C (1772-1773) C 26

The gentleman has told us there is no such thing as coercion justifiable under the Constitution. I ask him for one moment to reflect, that no statute ever was enforced without coercion. It is the basis of every law in the universe,--God's law as well as man's. A law is no law without coercion behind it. When a man has murdered his brother, coercion takes the murderer, tries him, and hangs him. --Congressman James Garfield [Ohio] (1831-1881), Reply to Alexander Long [Ohio], 8 April 1864, House of Representatives, 38th Session; _The Life and Work of James A. Garfield_ (1881)

Quotes for 25 Mar 17

Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny; and it is believedthat the most effectual means of preventing this would be to illuminate as far as practicable, the minds of the people at large that…they may be enabled to know ambition under all shapes and prompt to exert their natural powers to defeat its purposes.
--Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), Bill for the More General diffusion of Knowledge (1778)

Quotes for 24 Mar 17

A book is a mirror: If an ass peers into it, you can't expect an apostle to look out.
--Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (July 1 1742 – February 24 1799) (German scientist, satirist and philosopher), _Aphorisms (1765-1799)_ Notebook E (1775 - 1776) E 49

After eight years of bashing Christians, it’s nice to see Democrats praising Jesus again. But their arguments show a deep misunderstanding of what the faith mandates. Jesus called His followers to feed the hungry; He didn’t demand Pontius Pilate feed the hungry. Jesus didn’t don a balaclava, kick a centurion in the shins, and hang a #resistentiam banner from an aqueduct. He gathered the faithful and commanded them to love others. - Jon Gabriel, Ed.,  Render to Caesar the Things That Are Caesars

21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.
--Matthew 19:21-22, RSV
I note that Jesus did NOT say “Take what your neighbor possesses and give to the poor.”

Quotes for 23 Mar 17

"Over a half century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of old people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: "Men have forgotten God; that's why all this has happened." Since then I have spent well-nigh 50 years working on the history of our revolution; in the process I have read hundreds of books, collected hundreds of personal testimonies, and have already contributed eight volumes of my own toward the effort of clearing away the rubble left by that upheaval. But if I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some 60 million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat: "Men have forgotten God; that's why all this has happened.”ß   -Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn on communism.

"A faulty understanding of God and how to respond to him can only lead to praise that is inadequate in motivation and expression." —Trueman

A book which, above all others in the world, should be forbidden, is a catalogue of forbidden books. --Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (July 1 1742 – February 24 1799) (German scientist, satirist and philosopher), As quoted in A Dictionary of Scientific Quotations (1991) edited by Alan Lindsay Mackay, p. 153

Don't be content if your church is known for good bible teaching. It's desirable but not enough; necessary but not sufficient…- Sam Allberry

"Earth’s crammed with heaven,
And every common bush afire with God."
From ‘Aurora Leigh’ by Elizabeth Barratt Browning, who once described her passionate Christian commitment as "not the deep persuasion of the mild Christian but the wild visions of an enthusiast."

If private revelations agree with Scripture, they are needless, and if they disagree, they are false. John Owen

Belonging to Christ means freedom, not slavery. Don't think of Christianity as having to do what a peevish God wants. Think of it as now being able to do what a good God wants. Through union with Christ we are now empowered for holiness.~ Kevin DeYoung "The Hole in Our Holiness"

Quotes for 21 Mar 17

"All human institutions since the dawn of prehistory or earlier had always been designed to prevent change--all of them: family, government, church, army. Change has always been a catastrophic threat to human security." - Peter R. Drucker, _Technology, Management, and Society_ (2010)

It is only the supremely wise or the deeply ignorant who never alter. --Confucius (551-479 BC) (In Marion Parker's _Thoughts Of The Great:  A Scrapbook of Quotations_ [1960])

Without regeneration it is morally and spiritually impossible for a person to believe in Christ. —John Murray

A German friend once remarked that Hitler was only the second most destructive thing his country had unleashed upon the world.  Worse by far, he said, were the ideas of Karl Marx. The notion an idea could be more destructive than fleets of bombers and Panzer divisions is a large claim but there is evidence in support of it. ... Explosives can achieve gross destruction.  But it misses things between the craters;  by contrast a mental bomb can destroy civilization itself; its value, institutions, goals and even its grip upon
reality.  In the contest between Panzer division and Manifesto, the manifesto appears far the more powerful. The computer revolution has given us the tools to understand why Communism has so much devastating power.  We can now recognize it as history's greatest and most dangerous piece of intellectual malware, whose only true rival is radical Islam.

My usefulness was the last idol I was willing to part with, but the Lord has enabled me to give even this up. - John Newton‏ @john__newton

It may indeed be true that the liberal economic order permits great differences in income, but that in no way involves exploitation of the poor by richer people. What the rich have they have not taken away from the poor; their surplus could not be more or less redistributed to the poor in the socialist society, since in that society it would not be produced at all.  Ludwig Von Mises (1881-1973), _Nation, State, and Economy_ Ch. 2. "Socialism and Imperialism"

Until you supremely value Christ, your attitude towards clothing will be controlled by forces that don’t honor God.- John Piper

Some people still hold to those old fashioned views that marriage is for a man and woman and I think there’s a feeling amongst people that if you dare say that, again, you’re going to invite buckets of slime to be poured over your head. - Paul Embery, London regional secretary of the Fire Brigades Union

"The strongest bond of human sympathy, outside of the family relation, should be one uniting all working people, of all nations, and tongues, and kindreds. Nor should this lead to a war upon property, or the owners of property. Property is the fruit of labor; property is desirable; is a
positive good in the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another, but let him work diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built." - Abraham Lincoln, "Reply to a Committee from the Workingmen's Association of New York," March 21, 1864 (Complete Works, X, 53-54)

"The prudent, penniless beginner in the world labors for wages awhile, saves a surplus with which to buy tools or land for himself, then labors on his own account another while, and at length hires another new beginner to help him. This, say its advocates, is free labor-the just, and generous, and prosperous system, which opens the way for all, gives hope to all, and energy, progress, and
improvement of condition to all." - Abraham Lincoln, "Address before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society," September 3o, 1859 (Ibid., V, 249-250)

The cross is the place where we find the freedom to accept ourselves without being proud, & to challenge ourselves without being crushed.- Tim Keller Wisdom‏ @DailyKeller

When you and I truly encounter the Presence of the Living God,
our response is not to ask Him all those questions we have about life and death and everything else. It’s not to complain about what our lives are like or about what someone else did. A true encounter with God leads us to worship Him.- Rocky Henriques

In a word, the world does not explain itself, and cannot do so merely by continuing to expand itself. But anyhow it is absurd for the Evolutionist to complain that it is unthinkable for an admittedly unthinkable God to make everything out of nothing and then pretend that it is more thinkable that nothing should turn itself into everything. --G.K. "The church must seek to conquer not merely every man for Christ, but also the whole of man." —J. Gresham Machen

A Christian is one who recognizes Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God, as God manifested in the flesh, loving us and dying for our redemption; and who is so affected by a sense of the love of this incarnate God as to be constrained to make the will of Christ the rule of his obedience, and the glory of Christ the great end for which He lives. --Charles Hodge

"Man never attains to a true self-knowledge until he has previously contemplated the face of God, and come down after such contemplation to look into himself. For (such is our innate pride) we always seem to ourselves just, and upright, and wise, and holy, until we are convinced, by clear evidence, of our injustice, vileness, folly, and impurity."
John Calvin

Quotes 13 Mar 17 - in hospital

YouTube rumblings:- We know what is happening in this world, it is a jihad war against Christians and Christianity. It is a war against western education, democracy and constitution. We have not started, next time we are going to Abuja; we are going to refinery and towns of Christians. You don’t know me. I have no problem with Jonathan. This is what I know from the Qur’an. It is war against Christians and democracy and their constitution. Allah says we should finish them when we get them.’ (Shekau 2014)

“I have my own opinion that there is no such thing as preaching Christ and Him crucified, unless we preach what nowadays is called Calvinism. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else. I do not believe we can preach the gospel if we do not preach justification by faith without works; nor unless we preach the sovereignty of God in His dispensation of grace; nor unless we exalt the electing unchangeable eternal, immutable, conquering love of Jehovah; nor do I think we can preach the gospel unless we base it upon the special and particular redemption of His elect and chosen people which Christ wrought out upon the cross. (Charles Spurgeon, The New Park Street Pulpit, Vol. 1, 1856).”

Quotes 11 Mar 17 - still hospiital

"When home ties are loosened, when men and women cease to regard a worthy family life, with all its duties fully performed and all its responsibilities lived up to, as the best life worth living, then evil days for the commonwealth are at hand. There are regions in our land, and classes of our population, where the birth rate has sunk below the death rate. Surely it should need no demonstration to show that willful sterility is, from the standpoint of the human race, the one sin for which the national penalty is national - death, race death--a sin for which there is no atonement." - Theodore Roosevelt

"We moved from being a pretty beastly, brutal and horrible nation to one that was literally the envy of the world in the extent to which we were self-governing. "If anyone bothers to read the Quran, they will find that 'Islamic extremists' are the consistent muslims that rightly represent the religion, and that 'tolerant muslims' are inconsistent and nominal adherents of Islam."-Travis Fentiman

The undermining of Christian faith, systematically pursued by Western cultural and political elites, does not lead to some sort of secular Utopia with its own “neutral” morality, but to the rise of religious beliefs other than Christianity, which will bring their own –often opposite -moral values.-Giorgio Roversi, The Amorality of Atheism

Christ is not only a remedy for your weariness and trouble, but he will give you an abundance of the contrary, joy and delight. You never, ever start a day alone, because not matter how lonely you feel, your Savior is with you and hYe won't be leaving.~ Paul Tripp ~
 ·
Often, we can't help but worry about what tomorrow holds. We fret and become anxious about the outcome of a report, or meeting to be held. Paul, in Phil.4:6-7 gives the antidote to worry and anxiety by saying, " Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." In using the word "guard", Paul uses a military term, implying that the mind is a battle zone. A guard is capable of preventing a hostile take over. Anxiety removes the guard, but the peace of God operates in a way, so as to protect our minds from corrupting external forces.- Wayne Thring
