Do you love to be loved or do you love because you are loved? - Tim Keller Wisdom @DailyKeller
A theologian who undervalues Logic, as being little necessary to him, simply disarms himself. This was by no means the practice of our older theologians. They always emphasized most strongly the study of formal logic, together with its related arts.- Abraham Kuyper

Paul writes to the Phillipian church from prison, but what is amazing is the joy he expresses and encourages the Phillipians to express while still in prison. We see this in Phil.1:4, 5, 18, 25 and 26. Paul says in vs 25 in vs 26 "And being confident of this I know that I shall remain and continue with you for all your progress and joy of faith, 26 that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again." May we never allow the enemy to steal our joy. Our joy must not be a function of what we have or don't have, but despite our circumstances, know that our joy comes from our Lord.- Wayne Thring

To love anyone is nothing else than to wish that person good.--Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225-1274)
In fact most of the social pathology exhibited by the underclass has its origins in ideas that have filtered down from the intelligentsia. Of nothing is this more true than the system of sexual relations that now prevails in the underclass, with the result that 70 per cent of the births in my hospital are now illegitimate...The climate of moral, cultural, and intellectual relativism, a relativism that began as a mere fashionable plaything for the intellectuals, has been successfully communicated to those least able to resist its devastating practical effects. - T. Dalrymple

To know love is to know pain because over all love there stands written,’Till death us do part.’ But God promises reunion. We shall be ‘together’. They will not come to us but we shall go to them. 2Sam 12:23. Donald MacLeod, A Faith to Live By.
Unless you assume a God, the question of life's purpose is meaningless. - Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) (Quoted in Rick Warren's _The Purpose Driven Life_ [2002], Chapter 1)

He has loved us without being loved... We are bound to Him,
and not He to us, because before He was loved, He loved us...
There it is, then: we cannot... love Him with this first love.
Yet I say that God demands of us, that as He has loved us
without any second thoughts, so He should be loved by us. In
what way can we do this, then? ... I tell you, through a means
which he has established, by which we can love Him freely; ...
that is, we can be useful, not to Him--which is impossible--but
to our neighbour... To show the love that we have for Him, we
ought to serve and love every rational creature and extend our
charity to good and bad, as much to one who does us ill service
and criticizes us as to one who serves us. For, ... His charity
extends over just men and sinners.-Catherine of Siena (1347-1380), Saint Catherine of Siena as seen in her letters, J. M. Dent, 1906, p. 83
Let us learn from our Lord's warning words to pray for a humble, teachable spirit, whenever we open the pages of unfulfilled prophecy. Here, if anywhere, we need the heart of a little child, and the prayer "open my eyes." (Psalm 119:18.) Let us beware, on the one side, of that lazy indifference which turns away from all prophetical Scripture, on account of its difficulties. Let us beware, on the other side, of that dogmatical and arrogant spirit, which makes men forget that they are students, and talk as confidently as if they were prophets themselves. Above all, let us read prophetical Scripture with a thorough conviction that the study carries with it a blessing, and that more light may be expected on it every year. The promise remains in full force, "Blessed is he that reads. At the time of the end, the vision shall be unsealed." (Rev. 13; Dan. 12:9.)~ J.C. Ryle,Expository Thoughts on the Gospels: Luke volume 2 , [Carlisle, PA: Banner of Truth, 1998], 358, 359.

Humility and love are precisely the graces which the men of
the world can understand, if they do not comprehend doctrines.
They are the graces about which there is no mystery, and they
are within reach of all classes. The poorest... Christian can
every day find occasion for practicing love and humility.-J. C. Ryle (1816-1900), Expository thoughts on the Gospels, with the text complete, St. John, v. III, London: William Hunt, 1873, p. 16
We have no control over how we feel, how we act- our attitudes, and actions- except as they are determined by our thoughts. All these elements are irrevocably tied together. But since we do have control over what we think, it is possible to control our attitudes and actions…All thoughts can be divided into two basic categories: true and false. The thoughts that come from God are true. He is the God of all truth and has sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in us and to guide us into all truth. If I can receive God’s thoughts, I can think the truth. Therefore I will have the right attitudes and actions. How do you get the air out of a glass? By filling it with water. How do you get rid of wrong and untrue thoughts? By filling your mind with true and right thoughts from God. The control of our thought life, then, comes by thinking God’s thoughts with Him.- Peter Lord

Love is a grace which many professing Christians think far too little about; but it is of infinite value in the eyes of God. Love is the most characteristic feature of Christ’s image in a renewed man. Love is the most precious fruit of grace; and yet the fruit which too many of His professed followers seem to think themselves hardly under any obligation to cultivate.- John Angell James
If by doing some work which the undiscerning consider “not spiritual work” I can best help others, and I inwardly rebel, thinking it is the spiritual for which I crave, when in truth it is the interesting and the exciting, then I know nothing of Calvary love.- Amy Carmichael
Nothing is a surprise to God; nothing is a setback to His plans; nothing can thwart His purposes; and nothing is beyond His control. His sovereignty is absolute. Everything that happens is uniquely ordained by God. Sovereignty is a weighty thing to ascribe to the nature and character of God. Yet if He were not sovereign, He would not be God. The Bible is clear that God is in control of everything that happens.- Joni Eareckson Tada, Is God Really in Control, Joni and Friends, 1987, p. 1
Are we honest and sincere in our professed desire to be true Christians? Have we given up all our idols? Is there no secret sin that we are silently clinging to, and refusing to give up? Is there no thing or person that we are privately loving more than Christ and our souls? These are questions that ought to be answered. The true explanation of the unsatisfactory state of many hearers of the Gospel, is spiritual idolatry. We need not wonder that John says, "Keep yourselves from idols." (1 John 5:21.) ~ J.C. Ryle, Expository Thoughts on the Gospels: Matthew, [Carlisle, PA: Banner of Truth, 1986], 240, 241.

Kind words produce their own image in men's souls; and a beautiful image it is. They soothe and quiet and comfort the hearer. They shame him out of his sour, morose, unkind feelings. We have not yet begun to use kind words in such abundance as they ought to be used.-Blaise Pascal
Gold is a living god and rules in scorn,
All earthly things but virtue.- Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1792 - 1822
Never cease loving a person, and never give up hope for him, for even the Prodigal Son who had fallen most low, could still be saved. The bitterest enemy and also he who was your friend could again be your friend; love that has grown cold can kindle again.-Soren Kierkegaard

In Conspiracy A Biblical View, Gary North wrote that only three world views are serious contenders, the three which have an an eschatology of victory; biblical Christianity, Islam and Marxism. He wrote before the collapse of the 'evil empire'. Marxism is now only in places like N Korea and Western universities. The contenders are true Christianity and Islam. Unfortunately many Christians have not an eschatology of victory, only seeing things decline until Christ comes.- GJW

CAUTION! Non-exposure to the Son will cause burning.
My life goes on in endless song
• Above earth's lamentations,
• I hear the real, though far-off hymn
• That hails a new creation.
•
• Through all the tumult and the strife
• I hear it's music ringing,
• It sounds an echo in my soul.
• How can I keep from singing?
•
• While though the tempest loudly roars,
• I hear the truth, it liveth.
• And though the darkness 'round me close,
• Songs in the night it giveth.
•
• No storm can shake my inmost calm,
• While to that rock I'm clinging.
• Since love is lord of heaven and earth
• How can I keep from singing?
•
• When tyrants tremble in their fear
• And hear their death knell ringing,
• When friends rejoice both far and near
• How can I keep from singing?
•
• In prison cell and dungeon vile
• Our thoughts to them are winging,
• When friends by shame are undefiled
• How can I keep from singing?
• Eva Cassidy, How Can I Keep From Singing

Your home can be a place for dying or living, for wilting or blooming, for anxiety or peace, for discouragement or affirmation, for criticism or approval, for profane disregard or reverence, for suspicion or trust, for blame or forgiveness, for alienation or closeness, for violation or respect, for carelessness or caring. By your daily choices, you will make your home what you want it to be.- Carole Sanderson Streeter

"Your Father--who sees in secret." Matthew 6:6
Can anyone hide himself from the Lord in secret places? Can I, under any circumstances, escape His notice? Impossible! The eye of God has been fixed upon me every second of this day; it is now at this moment fixed fully upon me. But it is my Father's eye! My Father sees in secret! He sees my needs--and my woes. He sees every secret working of my foes--and will save me from them. He sees every secret influence which is likely to injure me--and will prevent it. He sees . . . the secret workings of my heart, my hidden thoughts, my unuttered desires, my soul conflicts, my private temptations. But He sees also my secret sins! Every evil thought, every improper action, every unfitting word--passes under His eye!Solemn consideration this!May it make me cautious. May it preserve me. . . from yielding to temptation, from nourishing sinful thoughts, and from acting inconsistent with my profession. My heavenly Father sees me! He sees me at this moment! He sees me
every moment! He sees my most secret motives, thoughts, and purposes! He who thus sees me--hates every sin with an infinite hatred!- James Smith, "The Pastor's Evening Visit", My Father's Eye!

The guidance of the Spirit is generally by gentle suggestions or drawings, and not in violent pushes; and it requires great childlikeness of heart to be faithful to it. The secret of being made willing lies in a definite giving up of our will. As soon as we put our will on to God's side, He immediately takes possession of it and begins to work in us to will and to do of His good pleasure.-Hannah Whitall Smith (1832-1911), Christian's Secret of a Holy Life, M. E. Dieter, ed., Grand Rapids, Mich.: Zondervan 1994, p. 134
The proof of who we are in Christ isn't how many folks have come to the Lord through us. It isn't how much we've contributed to the Lord's work. It isn't how sweetly we've sung his praises. It is, pure and simple, how we have loved each other. -Gayle Roper

While the local church is not the total body of Christ, it
must be seen to be [that body's] particular expression in its
worship, ministry, and mission. It has authority to preach the
gospel and administer the sacraments, but does not possess that
authority in isolation, only as part of the total catholic
Church. The authority of the local church can never, therefore,
be absolute or autonomous, for, if it [asserts such authority],
it denies that it is a part of the larger body and confuses the
Church of God with its particular expression in the local
church. It therefore requires a structure which allows it to
act with the authority of the Church of God, because it must be
Christ to its local community--while, at the same time,
demonstrating that it possesses such authority only because it
is part of the total Church of God whose authority is derived
from its organic relationship with Christ, its Head.-lan P. M. Cundy (b. 1945), "The Church as Community", in The People of God, Ian Cundy, ed., vol. 2 of Obeying Christ in a Changing World, John Stott, gen. ed., 3 vol., London: Fountain, 1977, p. 36

No eye has seen and no ear has heard
and no mind has ever conceived
the glorious things that you have prepared
for everyone who has believed.
You brought us near and you called us your own,
and made us joint heirs with your Son.
How high and how wide,
how deep and how long,
how sweet and how strong is your love;
how lavish your grace, how faithful your ways,
how great is your love, O, Lord?
Objects of mercy who should have known wrath,
we’re filled with unspeakable joy;
riches of wisdom; unsearchable wealth,
and the wonder of knowing your voice.
You are our treasure and our great reward,
our hope and our glorious King.
How high and how wide,
how deep and how long,
how sweet and how strong is your love;
how lavish your grace, how faithful your ways,
how great is your love, O, Lord?

A man can no more take in a supply of grace for the future than he can eat enough for the next six months or take sufficient air into his lungs at one time to sustain life for a week. We must draw upon God's boundless store of grace from day to day as we need it. - Dwight L. Moody

O the comfort, the inexpressible comfort, of feeling safe with a person;
Having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words,
but pour them all out just as they are,
chaff and grain together,
and a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping,
and with a breath of kindness,
blow the rest away.- George Elliott

Fear is the enemy of love
So don't be scared, we could lose it all
I'm here and I'm planning to stay
So don't let fear drive love away
Sweet as a mother's song
In the still of the night
Oh my love will be there
I'll be there, it's alright, it's alright
Time has a way of telling the truth
So be still, let time talk to you
See I, I can't make you believe
But I've never lied to you
I swear my heart is true
Sweet as a mother's song
In the still of the night
Oh my love will be there
I'll be there, it's alright, it's alright
Fear is the enemy of love
So don't be scared, we could lose it all
I'm here and I'm planning to stay
So don't let fear drive love away
Sweet as a mother's song
In the still of the night
Oh my love will be there
I'll be there, it's alright, it's alright
I said fear is the enemy of love

Don't you get annoyed when you go to a Vuvuzela concert and they start playing football?

O the comfort, the inexpressible comfort, of feeling safe with a person;
Having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words,
but pour them all out just as they are,
chaff and grain together,
and a faithful hand will take and sift them,
keep what is worth keeping,
and with a breath of kindness,
blow the rest away.- George Elliott
IT will be much more exciting to find that half fairy-tales are history even than to find that history is half fairy-tales.- Chesterton ILN 9/4/1909
Fear is the enemy of love
So don't be scared, we could lose it all
I'm here and I'm planning to stay
So don't let fear drive love away
Sweet as a mother's song
In the still of the night
Oh my love will be there
I'll be there, it's alright, it's alright
Time has a way of telling the truth
So be still, let time talk to you
See I, I can't make you believe
But I've never lied to you
I swear my heart is true
Sweet as a mother's song
In the still of the night
Oh my love will be there
I'll be there, it's alright, it's alright
Fear is the enemy of love
So don't be scared, we could lose it all
I'm here and I'm planning to stay
So don't let fear drive love away
Sweet as a mother's song
In the still of the night
Oh my love will be there
I'll be there, it's alright, it's alright
